Senior Forensic Scientist

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced forensic chemist to join an analytical services team in delivering expert chemical criminalistic evidence to operational police and courts of law including fire debris analysis for the presence of ignitable liquid residues, examination of paint, glass, gunshot residue, lachrymatory agents (capsicum sprays), light bulb examinations and the botanical certification of Cannabis. The Unit uses a number of specialised analytical instrumental techniques to deliver their services and is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) as being compliant with Standard ISO/IEC 17025 and Australian Standard AS5388.

Your key accountabilities
The core capability requirements for this role are:
- Conduct and oversee the examination and analysis of chemical trace evidence exhibits including ignitable liquid residues, gunshot residues, paint and polymers, glass and lachrymatory agents as well as microscopic certification of Cannabis.
- Ensure continued quality assurance compliance of all chemical trace evidence casework, prepare expert witness statements, reports, and provide expert level advice and/or testimony on chemical trace evidence examinations.
- Keep abreast of the latest technological developments relating to forensic trace chemical evidence.
- Facilitate and coordinate the education, training and professional development of personnel within the Analytical Services Unit and other members of the Queensland Police Service in relation to forensic trace chemical evidence.
- Supervise a team of professional forensic scientists addressing caseload management and monitoring, performance and development assessments, human resource management and mental health.
Role Requirements
Mandatory
- Possession of a “C” Class Driver's Licence as travel for official business is a requirement of the role.
Qualification
- Possession of a Bachelors degree in Science with major study components in chemistry from a recognised tertiary institution or an equivalent qualification.
Technical/ Operational/ Educational experience
- Subject/s completed from a tertiary institution in plant biology, botany or cell biology would be highly desirable.
- Relevant post-graduate qualifications in chemistry, forensic science and/or management would be highly desirable.
- Relevant experience in the analysis of one or more of the disciplines of ignitable liquid residues, paint, glass, gunshot residue, lachrymatory agents (capsicum sprays), light bulb examinations and botanical identification of Cannabis including accompanying court experience would be highly desirable.
