This role plays a critical part in supporting the department to deliver high level services to the Director General, Executive Leadership Team and broader organisation across audit, finance, procurement, people and culture, information and digital and strategic communication and engagement. The work of this team has a meaningful impact, contributing to outcomes that make a difference to the community every day.
As part of the Finance Division, the Taxation team is responsible for ensuring a strong and compliant tax position across the department. The team provides expert advice and services on a range of taxation matters including Goods and Services Tax (GST), Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), National Tax Equivalents Regime (NTER) and Payroll Tax.
In this role, you will lead and manage the end-to-end preparation, review and lodgement of the department's consolidated GST Group Business Activity Statement (BAS). This includes ensuring all monthly statements, payments and returns are accurate, appropriately approved and submitted on time to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) with reconciliations completed and signed off within required timeframes. You will also ensure all statutory taxation lodgements are delivered in a timely and compliant manner.
You will provide high level, expert advice on complex and sensitive taxation matters, including the preparation of submissions, briefing notes and reports for senior management and key stakeholders. A key focus of the role is ensuring ongoing compliance with relevant taxation legislation, policies and procedures across all tax types, and proactively advising on risks, obligations and emerging issues.
The role is responsible for leading critical taxation processes, including the monthly apportionment process, tax assessment of cost centre changes, and the annual review and recalibration of apportionment methodologies. You will conduct detailed analytical reviews of transactions to ensure the effectiveness of internal controls, identify and resolve non-compliance issues, and drive continuous improvement. You will contribute to the development and enhancement of taxation policies, systems and practices, including providing advice on complex contractual matters and representing the department in discussions with external agencies. The role also manages data supporting taxation assumptions for the annual GST Budget Estimates process and contributes to financial analysis and reporting.
In addition, you will lead the annual review of GST Act Division 129 transactions, ensure appropriate adjustments are processed, and maintain robust systems and processes for the efficient collection and storage of taxation data. You will also support capability development by designing and delivering training on taxation matters and contribute to quarterly and annual reporting to the Chief Finance Officer.
We are seeking a professional who demonstrates strong leadership, sound judgement and a commitment to public sector values, including integrity, accountability and continuous improvement. You will bring proven experience in providing high level taxation advice to senior stakeholders, leading statutory reporting processes within complex organisations, and building effective relationships across diverse stakeholder groups. Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills are essential along with the ability to influence outcomes and deliver high-quality services in a dynamic environment.
