For the Lawyer Who Wants to Run the Matter

A background in native title is not a prerequisite to get a start in this team. What matters is Federal Court litigation experience, sound statutory interpretation, and the judgment to run a complex matter well. If that's you, whether you've built it in commercial litigation, property, planning, or public law, Crown Law's Native Title Litigation team will get you specialising fast.

Your New Workplace

Crown Law is the in-house law firm for the Queensland Government, acting as the State's most trusted source of legal advice and representation. At Crown Law, you'll work alongside experienced litigators on matters that shape how native title plays out across the country, with the mentorship and development that comes from sitting inside a genuinely specialist team.

Your New Team

The Native Title Litigation team acts for the State in Federal Court native title determination and compensation proceedings, and leads negotiation and agreement-making to resolve those proceedings under the Native Title Act.

Reporting to the Assistant Crown Solicitor, you'll work across an established team with a substantial and ongoing caseload, and take on a genuine mentoring role for the lawyers around you, even without formal direct reports.

Your New Role

This role is litigation at its core. You'll manage native title determination and compensation applications through the Federal Court, advise on connection and evidentiary requirements, and negotiate Indigenous Land Use Agreements and settlements on the State's behalf. You'll also work through statutory interpretation questions that cut across the Native Title Act, and Queensland land legislation, often with no clean precedent to fall back on. The matters can be sensitive and, at times complex and challenging. Crown Law takes that seriously, with real support structures in place for the people carrying this work.

Culture & Benefits

Reflecting the rich diversity of Queensland, Crown Law brings together people from all backgrounds, with a strong focus on inclusion, collaboration and professional growth. It offers impactful legal work within a supportive culture, along with flexible working options, lower billable hour requirements than private practice, and a balanced approach that actively protects wellbeing. A full list of benefits, including generous leave entitlements, health and wellbeing programs and salary packaging options, is available in the candidate application pack.

Your Skills Profile

  • 5+ years post-admission litigation experience in native title, or a closely transferable area such as commercial, property, planning or public law litigation
  • Strong knowledge of Federal and High Court rules and procedure, with confidence tackling complex statutory interpretation
  • Advanced advocacy and drafting skills for highly complex or sensitive matters
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior lawyers, even without formal management responsibility
  • Sound judgement and resilience, with the ability to work through sensitive or difficult subject matter
  • Motivation to contribute to matters of fundamental importance to the State of Queensland
  • Comfortable operating within a structured government environment
  • Willingness to travel
