Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) plays a leadership role in the biosecurity system in collaboration with its stakeholders. BQ leads the Queensland Government's efforts to protect our way of life, environment, biodiversity, human and animal health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats. Through supporting the collective efforts of our stakeholders and all Queenslanders, BQ will continue to protect our state and Australia from emerging plant and animal pests and diseases and effectively manage existing ones.

Animal Biosecurity and Welfare (ABW) supports BQ's efforts to prevent, prepare, respond to, and recover from diseases threatening livestock industries and maintaining access to markets. Our people work together to uphold standards for animal welfare and management and help mitigate biosecurity risks. ABW, through the Animal Welfare Program (AWP), leads DPI responses to incidents to achieve outcomes consistent with the Department's strategic direction for leadership in animal welfare, exhibited animal, animal management and animal ethics policy and service delivery.

As Principal Compliance Officer, AWP you will:

  • Lead and manage a small team of dedicated Animal Welfare Senior Investigators in accordance with relevant legislation, and organisational policy and procedures to deliver high-quality animal welfare investigations
  • Review and identify animal welfare complaints reported to DPI that are significant or high-risk and require management by Senior Investigators.
  • Implement, report on and review evidence-based compliance strategies and plans
  • Provide high level support in relation to the management of animal welfare complaints to relevant staff within ABW, BQ and RSPCA Qld
  • Provide high level strategic and legislative advice relating to compliance and regulatory activities
  • Be flexible and have a keen eye for detail
  • Have excellent time management and problem-skilling skills
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships, networks and partnerships with stakeholders, including government and community, to facilitate effective animal welfare outcomes
  • Foster an environment that values individual and team performance and continuous improvement
  • possess a current “C” class drivers' licence.

There are no mandatory qualifications for this role, however a recognised qualification in Government Investigations or equivalent and experience/knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. Animal Care & Protection Act 2001, Biosecurity Act 2014) would be highly regarded.
