As a Policy Officer within the Policy and Legislation Branch, you will contribute to the development, review and implementation of strategic policy, legislative, regulatory and program initiatives that support the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation in achieving the Queensland Government's priorities and legislative agenda.

The Policy and Legislation Branch is part of the Environment and Heritage Policy and Programs Division, which leads the development and coordination of the State's environmental, conservation and waste policy, strategy and legislative frameworks.

The Division delivers key strategic initiatives that support government priorities, including environmental stewardship, biodiversity conservation, heritage protection, wetland management, waste avoidance and resource recovery, water quality improvement, Great Barrier Reef outcomes, and bioregional planning.
The Policy and Legislation Branch currently oversees the following:
• Environmental Protection Act 1994
• Environmental Offsets Act 2014
• Nature Conservation Act 1992
• Queensland Heritage Act 1992
• Queensland State of the Environment Report
• Conserving Nature - A Biodiversity Conservation Strategy for Queensland
• South-East Queensland Koala Strategy.

This position sits in the Legislation Unit, which plays a key role in developing, reviewing and coordinating environmental and conservation policy and legislation.
The role contributes to policy and legislative projects through research, analysis, stakeholder engagement and the development of evidence-based advice and recommendations. 

This includes supporting:
• Identification and analysis of policy problems and opportunities;
• Assessment of policy and legislative options;
• Development of practical and effective policy solutions; and
• Implementation of policy and legislative reforms.

Policy Officers within the Branch work in a collaborative and agile environment and may contribute to projects across a range of business areas. Knowledge or experience in nature conservation, heritage conservation, environmental management, natural resource management, land use planning or related fields will be highly regarded.
