Reporting to the Assistant Auditor-General, Performance Audit, the Report Strategist supports audit teams in planning, developing and refining reports to parliament. Working across all phases of the audit lifecycle, the role helps teams communicate complex findings logically and effectively, contributing to high-quality, evidence-based reporting outcomes. Your expertise will help us improve the clarity and impact of QAO’s reports by developing sharp structures, engaging narratives and accessible presentation concepts. Your writing will demonstrate strategic, audience-focused thinking and the effective application of plain language principles and style guides. The role enables the timely and efficient delivery of multiple reports by strengthening report planning, managing competing priorities, and building audit teams’ capability through mentoring and coaching.

Our new Report Strategist role partners with audit teams throughout the audit lifecycle to plan, structure and prepare clear, compelling and accessible reports to parliament.

The role provides expert advice and facilitates discussions to help teams identify and refine key audit messages, findings, conclusions and recommendations. It supports teams to synthesise complex evidence and analysis into concise, audience-focused content that meets readers' needs and strengthens the potential impact of QAO's audits.

The role develops and reviews logical report structures, narrative frameworks, and graphical concepts that improve the interest in and impact of our reports. It enhances audit team capability, helping them deliver high-quality reports efficiently and within required timeframes. This includes managing competing priorities and contributing to multiple reports simultaneously.

Working closely with QAO's Communications team and executive leaders, the Report Strategist also contributes to presentations and communication strategies that support the promotion of audits.

A key aspect of the role includes mentoring and coaching our people in report planning, strategic thinking and written communication. The role promotes independence, objectivity and integrity throughout the report preparation process.
