Transport and Main Roads is seeking a qualified Town Planner to join the Project Planning and Corridor Management team in Rockhampton. This is an opportunity to apply your planning expertise to development and infrastructure matters that affect communities, businesses and road users across a large and diverse region.
Central Queensland Region manages approximately 9,076 kilometres of state-controlled roads and 1,510 kilometres of the National Road Network. Working across this extensive network will give you exposure to varied planning issues, from urban and coastal development to projects in rural and remote communities.
About the role:
As Town Planner, you will provide specialist planning and development assessment advice relating to transport infrastructure and the state-controlled road network. You will work within the Project Planning and Corridor Management team and report to the Principal Town Planner.
Your work will involve applying the Planning Act 2016, Planning Regulation 2017, Transport Infrastructure Act 1994 and relevant policies and standards. You will manage planning matters through their full lifecycle, identify transport impacts and work with stakeholders to achieve practical outcomes.
What you will do:
In this role, you will:
• Assess development applications and provide advice on transport-related planning matters.
• Review state and local government planning documents and prepare responses on behalf of the region.
• Advise on road advertising signs, notifiable road uses, works within statecontrolled road reserves and ministerial designations.
• Manage development applications, correspondence and records using relevant planning and corridor management systems.
• Identify required changes to planning documents and provide clear, evidencebased advice.
• Coordinate activities to meet agreed timeframes, quality requirements and stakeholder expectations.
• Consult and negotiate with councils, applicants, developers, internal specialists and other stakeholders.
What you will bring:
You will use sound judgement to analyse complex information, identify workable solutions and explain planning matters clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. You will be organised, accountable and comfortable managing competing priorities while maintaining accurate, high-quality work.
A tertiary qualification in Town Planning, or another relevant qualification acceptable to the Planning Institute of Australia, and a current class C driver licence are mandatory. Experience in transport infrastructure planning, development assessment under the Planning Act 2016, or systems including eDAM, PARC and iMaps will be highly regarded.
What we offer:
This temporary, flexible full-time role is available until 11 June 2027, with possible extension. You will receive superannuation and leave loading benefits, access to flexible working arrangements and support to grow your planning capability within a specialised transport environment.
You will join an inclusive team where your advice can directly influence development and transport outcomes across Central Queensland. If you are ready to build your experience, work on varied planning matters and contribute to the safe and effective management of the road network, we encourage you to apply.
Applications to remain current for 12 months.
