The Vector Control Officer (VCO) is accountable for performing vector control operations to minimise the threat of mosquito-borne diseases.

As a member of Medical Entomology, Tropical Public Health Services (Cairns), the VCO will liaise with stakeholders, government agencies, and community members in relation to Queensland health's mosquito management program.

About the role:

  • Perform routine and emergency vector control of mosquitoes. Control may include interior applications of insecticide, premise-to-premise inspections, servicing mosquito traps, and treatment or removal of mosquito breeding sites.  Frequent trips will be required potentially at short notice.  Weekends and after hours work will be required during disease outbreaks.
  • Demonstrate ability to interact sensitively, effectively and professionally with people from diverse cultural, socioeconomic and education backgrounds
  • Collaboratively participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of components of single and/or multi-strategy public health interventions that reflect the needs of stakeholders and partners to deliver priority population health outcomes within available resources.
  • Translate public health evidence into information that health workers, policy makers, partners and the public can understand and use.

This position requires application of chemicals to control mosquitoes. A current pest management technician license would be well regarded.
