The role 

The Clinical Nurse (CN) - Communicable Diseases role provides clinical leadership, direction and support to Health Contact Centre Allied Health and Nursing staff using advanced clinical skills and knowledge within a problem-solving framework.  Working in conjunction with the Nurse Manager this position is responsible and accountable for the delivery and follow up of excellent person-centred evidence-based care at an advanced level as part of the Communicable Disease team.

This role reports to the Communicable Diseases - Nurse Manager and supports the administration team, Telephone Counsellors and 13HEALTH Virtual Care Nurses at the HCC.

Please note: After a period of training and induction at either Herston or Zillmere this position has the option of operating  in a hybrid model with some working from home.

Key responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing safe, compassionate care, integrating the nursing and midwifery Professional Practice Model, quality frameworks and Person-Centred Care approaches of caring for each patient's psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical care needs. This supports achievement of best clinical practice and individualised patient care and outcomes.
  • Provide specialist advice on the clinical aspects of immunisation to 13 HEALTH staff, health professionals, the general public and other stakeholders utilising a sound knowledge of relevant legislation, guidelines and standards.
  • Demonstrate participation in developing, evaluating and updating clinical service procedures, protocols, standards and guidelines.
  • Apply the quality framework by engaging in incident reporting/investigation and conducts quality improvement audits and develops risk minimisation strategy activities to promote safe and/or rectify unsafe practice.
  • Act as a clinical and educational resource within an area based on knowledge, skills and experience to inform evidence-based practice.
  • Responsible for updating and managing own contemporary nursing specialist knowledge, competence and capability.

About you

We are searching for someone who:

  • Demonstrate advanced level clinical and problem-solving skills, expert planning and coordination skills in the clinical management and delivery of comprehensive person-centred care.
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of contemporary practice and theory in speciality area
  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the relevant standards and processes; engage in incident investigation, risk mitigation strategies that foster and support safe practice.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships, open communication within a healthcare team
  • Participate in developing and undertaking quality initiatives and audits, identifying inconsistencies between policy and practice.
  • Work collaboratively in leading implementation of policies, practice changes and clinical innovations.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge, skills and competence in Immunisation/Communicable Diseases theory and practice.
  • Demonstrates experience in collaborative care and engaging in reflective practice that positively impacts client's outcomes

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

Mandatory Requirements

  1. Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as a Registered Nurse (RN). Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervision/manager prior to the commencement of employment. 
  2. Immunisation Program Nurse Qualification is mandatory and relevant experience in the area is essential. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate manager prior to the commencement of duties.

Additionally, appointment to this position requires the following:

  • The applicant will be expected to possess effective computer skills or the ability to acquire computer skills relative to the role and knowledge of, or have the ability to acquire knowledge of, relevant IT applications including public health databases.
  • Authorised Contact Tracing Officer or ability to complete shortly after commencement of role
  • Although usual business days are Monday to Friday, working usual business hours, work outside normal business hours/days will be required occasionally, including periods of time on call to suit operational service needs.
