About the School
Mackay Northern Beaches State High School is located 10km from the centre of Mackay in the growing Northern Beaches area of Mackay. The school opened in January 2013 and boasts modern facilities with the very latest state-of-the-art technology embedded across the curriculum. Mackay Northern Beaches SHS has a strong house culture and has Positive Behaviour for learning (PBL) embedded in the ways of working across the school. The school is seeking a dedicated Head of Department to join the progressive Leadership team for 2026.
About the Role
This Head of Department position will be suited to an energetic and future-focused individual who has the ability to continue to consolidate the opportunities and outcomes for the Year 9 cohort. You will not only influence positive student learning outcomes but identify opportunities for student participation in school and community experiences. Whilst their practice needs to have a strong pastoral focus, they also need to be fully abreast of curriculum and learning expectations for this cohort.
As the Head of Department - Year 9, you will possess solid strategic practices for managing resources to achieve the outcomes noted previously. The successful applicant for this position will possess strong relational capabilities and curriculum knowledge capabilities to ensure successful leadership across this large cohort as well as participating in leadership of whole-school strategic initiatives.
As the Head of Department (Year 9), your responsibilities will include:
- Lead the school department to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
- Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
- Set high standards for student and staff performance.
- Actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
- Form partnerships with students, parents, other government agencies, and community groups.
- Be futures oriented and strategic.
- Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students and staff within the school department.
- Manage the human, financial, facilities and curriculum resources of the school department to achieve goals
