They must also show effective communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage school operations and build positive relationships within the school community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Principal to lead the school community to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • Deputise for the Principal when required.
  • Uphold the deputy principalship as a values based, ethical and moral activity.
  • Embed socially just practices in daily school life.

About You:

A Deputy Principal in a primary school plays a key leadership role in supporting both the educational and wellbeing needs of the school community.

The most important qualities include:

  • Strong leadership and integrity – the ability to lead by example, make sound decisions, and build trust with staff, students, and families.
  • Excellent communication skills – clear, respectful, and open communication with all stakeholders, including staff, students, parents, and the wider community.
  • Curriculum capability- current knowledge of Australian Curriculum V9 and ability to plan with staff across the school.
  • Commitment to student wellbeing and learning – a genuine focus on creating a safe, inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically and socially.
  • Organisational and problem-solving skills – the capacity to manage competing priorities, respond to challenges effectively, and support smooth school operations.
  • Collaboration and teamwork – working closely with the principal, teachers, and support staff to foster a positive, cohesive school culture.
  • Adaptability and resilience – remaining calm under pressure and responding flexibly to the dynamic nature of school environments.
