Who We Are:

Gladstone Central State School was established in 1861 as the first school in Gladstone.

Our school now occupies a central position in the city, close to the central business district.

Our school services a wide community comprising the city area, inner residential suburbs and the wider community.

42% of our current enrolments are drawn from outside our school catchment area.

The relatively small student population in comparison to other local schools is often cited by parents as a reason for choosing to enrol their child at our school.

The Head of Department - Teaching and Learning will support student achievement through the implementation of impactful curriculum and pedagogical practices across our learning environment. Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Embed socially just practices in daily school life.
  • Set high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Engage in lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Build partnerships with students, parents, agencies, and community groups.
  • Be future-oriented and strategic.
  • Understand legislation and policies impacting on the school department, students and staff.
  • Manage the human, financial, facilities and other school resources to achieve goals.
  • Manage staff, timetabling, resources and school operations to enable effective teaching, learning and wellbeing practices across classes and supported programs.

Must-Have Skills and Experience:

  • Current Queensland teacher registration and eligibility for leadership roles. 
  • Demonstrated success in instructional leadership and improving student outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of Science of Reading.
  • Strong knowledge of inclusive education and differentiation strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Capacity to lead change and foster a collaborative team culture. 

Nice-to-Have Skills and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of Science of Learning
  • Strong understanding of the Numeracy P-12 informing paper and associated research
  • Familiarity with digital tools including AI.
  • Strong understanding of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and wellbeing frameworks.
