This is a temporary full-time position for the 2027 school year, from 21 January until 10 December 2027, unless otherwise determined.
About us:
We are seeking a focused, highly skilled and collaborative Guidance Officer to join a committed team dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes and pathways for all students. Working primarily across Years 8, 9 and 11, the successful applicant will provide responsive counselling, assessment, case management and targeted support that strengthens student engagement, inclusion, wellbeing and achievement. Building positive relationships with students, families, staff and external agencies, while contributing professional expertise to whole-school student support priorities, will be central to success in this temporary position with potential for extension.
Located 10 kilometres from central Mackay in the Northern Beaches area, Mackay Northern Beaches State High School opened in 2013 and offers modern facilities and contemporary technology embedded across the curriculum.
The school has a strong House culture, with Positive Behaviour for Learning embedded in its expectations and ways of working. Staff work collaboratively to support positive student outcomes and future pathways.
Your opportunity:
As Guidance Officer, you will:
- Provide targeted Guidance Officer services across Years 8, 9 and 11, responding to identified and changing student needs.
- Deliver counselling, psychoeducational assessment, individual case management, referral and advice addressing educational, behavioural, career, mental health and family needs.
- Work with students, families, school staff, multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to coordinate support that improves access, engagement and inclusion.
- Develop and implement preventative, early intervention and targeted support programs, including individualised plans, educational adjustments, behaviour support and risk management strategies.
- Provide specialised leadership and support for student protection matters, complex student needs, critical incidents, emergencies and transitions between educational settings.
- Support SET planning, career development and future pathway decisions.
- Strengthen staff and parent capability through professional learning and targeted programs.
- Contribute professional expertise to whole-school student support programs and priorities.
