Applications are invited from suitably qualified professionals, other than psychiatrists, with expertise in the care of persons who have an intellectual disability, for appointment as an assisting clinician to the Mental Health Court.

Applicants may be from any appropriate profession, including, but not limited to, social work, psychology, geriatrics or neurology.

The assisting clinician provides advice to the Mental Health Court on the meaning and significance of clinical evidence and offers advice about clinical issues relating to the treatment, care and detention needs of a person under the Mental Health Act 2016 and Forensic Disability Act 2011.  

The successful candidate(s) will:

  • possess extensive experience in diagnosing persons with an intellectual disability;
  • possess extensive experience, and knowledge, of the care requirements for persons who have an intellectual disability and the system for providing care in Queensland;
  • require an understanding of the forensic issues concerning to persons with an intellectual disability;
  • require an understanding of the rights of the intellectually disabled, including the right to natural justice;
  • require knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire the knowledge, of the Mental Health Act 2016 and Forensic Disability Act 2011;
  • possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to relate effectively with the judiciary on issues related to intellectual disability.
