An opportunity has become available for a Student Support Officer (AO4) to join the Team at Tagai State College - SchoolTech program. This is a Temporary Full-time position, based at the secondary campus of Tagai State College, until 04 December 2026 unless otherwise determined.

About the School

Tagai State College consists of 16 Primary campuses and one Secondary campus. These campuses are spread across 48,000 square kilometres of ocean in the Torres Strait. The College also has a TAFE campus located on Thursday Island.

About SchoolTech

Tagai State College has secured approx. $2 million in funding through DYJESBT to run the SchoolTech program for Grade 11 and 12 students in 2024-2026 (3 years), with the vision of making this sustainable into the future.
SchoolTech enables students to combine their QCE studies, Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses and Structured Work Placement, and is focused on preparing students for employment and facilitating a smooth transition from school to work.
Within SchoolTech, there is a strong focus on sustainable partnerships, particularly with, Employers, Industry bodies and TAFE Queensland.

Your Opportunity

The Student Support Officer will:

  • Liaise and provide support to students and families in the SchoolTech Program at the College and liaise with the wider community.
  • Promote the benefits of the SchoolTech Program to improve outcomes for students and families.

The Student Support Officer reports to the nominated supervisor, Senior Project Officer (SchoolTech).

Your Repsonsibilities

The Student Support Officer will:

  • Implement systems to effectively case manage students in the SchoolTech pathway and provide intervention strategies when necessary
  • Collect and maintain records of student progress in all VET courses, liaising with trainers to provide up to date information on achievement and outcomes
  • Provide student support during Training and Assessment and during VET Blocks.
  • Monitor participation, behaviour, attendance and wellbeing of students and provide intervention when necessary e.g. Manage VET Block attendance, and contact families of at-risk students
  • Implement initiatives to improve engagement in VET
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with students, parents, community and elders, and provide input into local decision making to ensure optimum outcomes.
  • Liaise with families and conduct home visits to encourage school attendance and to motivate students.
  • Liaise with students and families to recognise any educational, social, emotional or behavioural issues.
  • Develop innovative and effective strategies for building relationships among students, families, community members and stakeholder groups to promote communication and resolve issues of concern.
  • Update QCAA Student Management for students from Grade 10 - 12.

Please note: there is NO departmental housing associated with this role. The successful applicant MUST have accommodation available locally.
