An opportunity exists for a Head of Department - Middle School to join the Tagai State College - Secondary Campus team in Term 3 for a period of 12 months.

This position is offered on a temporary full-time basis covering a maternity leave period.

This is a temporary full-time position for 12 months, to commence from 13 July 2026 until end of term 2, 2027, unless otherwise determined.

Who we are at Tagai State College

Tagai State College comprises of 16 Primary Campuses, 1 Secondary campus and a TAFE facility spread across 15 islands and 48,000 square kilometres in the beautiful Torres Strait. The position is based at Thursday Island Secondary and travel to outer Islands primary campuses via light aircraft, is an essential component of the role.

The Role

As the Head of Department, you will:

  • Lead curriculum focus in line with school and departmental initiatives
  • Participate in delivering the vision of Early Childhood and State Schools Division
  • Develop the quality of teaching and learning

Responsibilities include:

  • Nurture positive relationships between students, teachers and stakeholders.
  • Develop an effective transition system for year 6 - 9 students who are transitioning from Primary to Secondary schooling.
  • Provide leadership, support and case management when responding to students disengaged from schooling.
  • Lead the development of transition events and activities including extra-curricular programs.
  • Coordinate transition visits through the College.
  • Lead the transition work of the Student Welfare Officers, in consultation with Heads of Campus and YUMI Education.
  • Develop and coordinate the scholarship system and establish the Academic Excellence program.
  • Support transitions from home to boarding facilities within the College.
  • Support transitions from home to other boarding facilities outside of the college.
  • Providing support and intervention to students in Years 6-9 that align to the Positive Culture for Learning system.
  • Monitor, analyse, report and respond to student data.
  • Lead teaching staff to develop and implement appropriate pedagogy for Year 6-9 students including differentiation for EAL/D Learners.
