The College and Students:

The Northern Peninsula Area State College services students from the communities of Injinoo, Umagico, Bamaga, New Mapoon and Seisia. The communities are situated about 30 kilometres from the tip of Cape York. The outlying towns of Seisia in the Northwest and Injinoo in the Southwest, are approximately 12 Kilometres apart on the western side of the cape and all the towns are connected by sealed roads.

The primary school aged students residing in Bamaga and Injinoo walk to school, while the primary school aged students from the other communities are transported to school by bus or private motor vehicle. Injinoo Junior Campus generally takes enrolments from Injinoo and Umagico, whilst Bamaga Junior Campus services the other three communities. The high school aged students from all communities are transported to Bamaga Senior Campus by private motor vehicle or school bus, whilst the older students residing in Bamaga usually walk.

The Community:

The NPA communities consist of people who identify strongly with Aboriginal culture, Torres Strait Islander culture and non-indigenous cultures. Many local families originate from Saibai Island and Badu Island, as well as many other islands in the Torres Strait.

The people of Injinoo are descendants of the original Aboriginal people of this area, while other Aboriginal communities have strong ties with Old Mapoon near Weipa or Lockhart River. There is a regular flow of family members visiting relatives and relatives visiting from throughout the Torres Strait and other mainland centres such as Townsville, Cairns and Weipa. This makes for a variety of cultural practices, experiences and expectations.

Living in Bamaga:

Living and working in the remote town of Bamaga, you will have access to the benefits the Department offers for temporary teachers and staff employed in rural and remote locations. These benefits include travel, location allowances and subsidised departmental housing.

The Opportunity:

The successful applicants will contribute to the development of a comprehensive student support and wellbeing program that is responsive to the needs of the school community. You will be required to provide leadership, support and case management in responding to some of the most complex and challenging of circumstances including student protection matters, critical incidents and mental health issues. You will have the ability to form strong and productive relationships with key stakeholders in order to develop and implement plans and programs that are responsive to the needs of students.

Guidance Officers are required to participate in regular clinical and technical supervision with a Senior Guidance Officer or their nominee, to ensure the provision of ongoing professional support and development.
