About Us

The Specialised Psychogeriatric Consultative Service (SPCS) is designed to enhance the care of older adults with dementia or other neurodegenerative disorders, who present with complex behavioural and psychological symptoms and, who are not under the direct care of geriatricians. The SPCS will provide expert psychogeriatric consultation to general physicians and specialty teams caring for people living with dementia who are exhibiting a change in behaviours and psychological symptoms across services within Gold Coast Health and Hospital Service (GCHHS).

In consultation with the treating team, the SPCS will support the care for people living with dementia and/or experiencing delirium and who are experiencing Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) in the acute health care environment. This position will facilitate the delivery of quality, safe, and coordinated care, which optimises health outcomes for people who present to the hospital with a range of complex symptoms and vulnerabilities associated with dementia and delirium.

The SPCS is part of a network of clinical services that support the care of patients experiencing BPSD in the appropriate clinical environment to their needs and will work collaboratively with Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Community Services, Geriatrician, Psychiatrist, and the specialist unit's nursing staff to introduce, review, and evaluate emerging models of care for patients living with dementia within GCHHS.
