About the Children's Health Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee

The Children's Health Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee (CHQ HREC) serves one of Australia's largest research communities, reviewing applications for research studies across all phases of health research. The CHQ HREC meets every 6 weeks, both in-person or virtually to review and assess the ethical and scientific validity of research applications for studies to be undertaken within Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CHQ) facilities, across Queensland and nationally across Australia.

Role Details

  • Fostering positive relationships and communication between the HREC and research applicants
  • Providing high-level advice to HREC staff and child health clinicians and researchers to promote understanding of relevant ethical issues in research governance 
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge in the field of human research ethics (particularly in paediatric and child health area) including new developments, legislation, and industry standards
  • Strategically planning, developing, implementing, maintaining, and reviewing HREC procedures, systems, and policies in association with the CHQ HREC Chairperson, and key stakeholders in CHQHHS, Queensland Health (QH) and nationally 
  • Leading and directing the activities of the HREC office to ensure the workload is managed
  • Directing administrative activities such as screening and accepting applications; uploading to the research ethics database (AURED) and ensuring that relevant documents are registered and stored securely
  • Directing the comprehensive maintenance of HREC research files and AURED for each study
  • Managing the operations of and providing support to the CHQ HREC
  • Attending and minuting meetings of the HREC
  • Managing the review of responses to HREC recommendations
  • Supervising the monitoring of study reporting responsibilities to facilitate the national approach to single ethical review of multicentre research
  • Undertaking descriptive statistical analysis of research submissions and providing annual reports on the activities of the Committee to the NHMRC, and other external bodies as required, and quarterly reports to CHQ Executive, and CHQHHS Executive Research Directorate
