About the Team

The division of surgery & perioperative services at CHQ provides a comprehensive state-wide consultant-led tertiary referral service providing ambulatory and in-patient care.  The multiple specialty teams provide quaternary care for pre-term infants, babies, children, and young people requiring emergency, urgent and planned acute care.  The teams work as part of larger multidisciplinary clinical teams and in concert with the divisional Nurse and Nurse Unit Managers, Nurse Navigators, Nurse Practitioners, and the Divisional leadership team to deliver comprehensive care across the continuum of CHQ's services.   

About the Role

The purpose of this role is to provide clinical expertise and consultancy through advanced clinical leadership relevant to the infant care within surgical services. The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) provides direct and indirect care as required and works in collaboration with the Nurse Unit Manager, Nurse Educator and wider health care team support the clinical unit in provision of safe quality healthcare through exemplary clinical nursing standards of practice. This role will:

  • Collaborate with peer NUMs and CNCs to undertake an analysis of the in-patient ward configuration to facilitate the safe integration of infants in surgical home wards. This includes the physical environment, equipment, and clinical workforce capability.
  • Establish and implement a framework to support the surgical inpatient team's delivery of infant-specific care that is underpinned by contemporary, evidence-based principles of family-centred care. This will have a particular focus on ensuring babies are considered as a person with the ability to communicate, initiate and respond to their environment and caregivers.
  • Identify and implement system improvements that prioritises communication between staff, parents and infants and facilitates the sharing of appropriate infant care skills and knowledge.
