Indooroopilly State High School invites applications from enthusiastic and highly motivated Employee Sign Language Interpreters for this part-time position of two days per week until 11th December 2026, unless otherwise determined.

It would be highly desirable for the successful applicant will need to possess a National Accredited Authority of Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) Level 3 - Professional Level certification, as well as experience interpreting in the education context and familiarity with key Department of Education terminology.

This position is being offered in a Temporary Part-Time capacity (0.41FTE), 30 hours per fortnight.

Your opportunity

As the In-House Professional Interpreter (Auslan) Employee Sign Language Interpreter you will:

  • Undertake interpreting duties (English > Auslan > English) for Deaf and hard of hearing DoE staff, students and the wider school community.
  • Undertake calendar and financial management for additional interpreters when more than one interpreter is required.

The In-House Professional Interpreter (Auslan) Employee Sign Language Interpreter reports to the Head of Department – Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide a full range of interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing employees, students and the wider school community.
  • Interpret a range of departmental conversations, meetings, training sessions, counselling sessions or other requested events.
  • Provide interpretation for pre-recorded materials such as stories, lessons and announcements using video editing tools.
  • Interpret for Deaf parents to ensure access to department events and meetings including those with principles and corporate officers. Interpret for hearing employees who cannot use sign language in
    circumstances where required with staff such as parents, principals, guidance officers and corporate officers.
  • Coordinate interpreting schedule conflicts and reschedule short notice priorities as they occur.
  • Organise additional interpreters to partner for longer interpreting roles or when in-house interpreter is not available.
  • Adhere to the National Accredited Authority of Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) Code of Ethics for interpreters at all times.
