Community Education Counsellor (Identified) - Wavell State High School

Wavell State High School is seeking a passionate and community minded person to join our school as a Community Education Counsellor.

Reporting to the Principal (or delegate), you will provide educational counselling and culturally responsive support across the school, helping to strengthen student engagement, wellbeing, and participation. You will work collaboratively with school staff, families, community organisations, and external agencies to build strong partnerships and connect students with the support they need to succeed.

This role is ideal for someone who is committed to empowering Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, values collaboration, and is passionate about creating culturally safe and inclusive learning environments.

This position is being offered in a Temporary Part-Time capacity (0.80FTE), 58 hours per fortnight.

About our School:

Wavell State High School is situated between Wavell Heights, Kedron and Chermside in a residential environment. The school is seven kilometres from the Brisbane central business district. The school offers a wide range of opportunities available for our students, both within the school curriculum and through extra-curricular activities. Wavell State High School is a large highly sought after school characterised by outstanding achievement in the academic, cultural and sporting arenas. The school comprises a junior school (years 7, 8 and 9) and a senior school (years 10, 11 and 12). Our staff are extremely committed towards ensuring our students achieve to their highest potential. Wavell State High School's P&C is very supportive and has worked hard to ensure our students have access to excellent facilities and programs.

About the Role:

  • Provide educational counselling and support services within the school to ensure that the best possible assistance services are available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, students, families and communities.
  • Provide cross cultural awareness training to the broader school community.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide educational counselling and support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Strengthen engagement with students, families, schools, and community partners to improve educational participation and outcomes.
  • Develop and deliver culturally responsive support programs and provide advice on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, protocols, and cultural awareness.
  • Build partnerships with community organisations and external support services to enhance student wellbeing and success.
  • Support school in effectively implementing programs and initiatives that benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
