Your new role:
As a Clinical Coder Trainee, you'll support accurate health data reporting by learning to assign morbidity and procedure codes using ICD-10-AM standards. You'll receive hands-on training, mentorship, and the foundation for a rewarding career in health information management by:
- Actively participating in on-the-job education and training to become an independent coder.
- Reviewing patient records and abstracting relevant clinical information in accordance with national standards.
- Assigning accurate morbidity and procedure codes using ICD-10-AM, ACHI, and the Australian Coding Standards.
- Using clinical information systems such as ieMR, HBCIS, 3M Codefinder, and The Viewer.
- Participating in departmental audits, coding quality activities, and education programs.
- Engaging with clinical teams to clarify documentation and ensure data integrity.
About you:
You're motivated to build a professional future in health information and bring enthusiasm for continuous learning and attention to detail. You'll demonstrate this with:
- Strong interest in clinical coding, health data, or medical terminology.
- Sound communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- High standards of accuracy, integrity, and professional ethics.
- Motivation to learn coding systems, clinical processes, and data standards.
- Flexibility and commitment to quality improvement and continuous education.
- Desirable qualifications or training such as:
- Completion of a Medical Terminology course or challenge exam.
- Introductory ICD-10-AM or equivalent coding course.

The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital (QEII) is a medium metropolitan adult facility providing a range of inpatient and outpatient services including a 24-hour Emergency Department. We provide a range of services, including surgery, cardiology, endoscopy, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, geriatric, respiratory and emergency medicine.
We're making our hospital bigger and better to make it easier for our growing community to get the health care they need. We'll have more beds, medical wards and expanded intensive care and emergency services planned to be opened by 2027.
