As a Community Education Counsellor (Identified), you'll be instrumental in strengthening inclusive education and fostering cross-cultural understanding within Queensland state schools.

This role is offered on a temporary part-time basis, at 0.60 FTE and 43.5 hours per fortnight from 10 June 2025 until 12 December 2025, unless otherwise determined.

About the Role

The Community Education Counsellor (Identified) at Balmoral State High School plays a crucial role in supporting the educational experience and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students within the school. Reporting to the school Principal or delegate, you will provide tailored educational counselling and support services, working closely with students, families, and the wider school community. Your key duties include; developing and delivering support programs to enhance student participation, supporting achievement through initiatives and promoting cultural awareness within the school. Additionally, you will coordinate cultural events and foster strong connections between the school and local communities.

This role also involves monitoring student attendance and achievement, conducting in-class cultural presentations, and facilitating workshops. You will provide cultural advice to staff, mentor students, and assist with school-wide initiatives like parent and community engagement, enrolments, and re-entry or exclusion meetings. As a part-time position (three days a week), this role is essential in creating a culturally responsive school environment that supports the success and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide educational counselling and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families, and communities within Balmoral State High School.
  • Develop and deliver culturally relevant support programs to enhance student participation, retention, and achievement.
  • Coordinate and facilitate cultural awareness workshops and events.
  • Monitor student attendance, achievement, and wellbeing, offering mentoring and behaviour support where needed.
  • Provide cultural advice to staff and assist with initiatives like parent and community engagement, enrolments, and re-entry or exclusion meetings.

Mandatory Requirements for and Identified Role:   

It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.   

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage   

For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:   

  • of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;  
  • accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.   

By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.   

Applicants to this position may have to provide confirmation of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. Requesting proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage from applicants helps to make sure that this intention is honoured.
