Administration Officer (Braille) - Narbethong State Special School

Experience with braille production and assistive technologies desirable. Applicants for this position must possess, or be willing to undertake, appropriate training/proficiency testing to obtain a Trans-Tasman Certificate of Proficiency in Unified English Braille (the braille code used in Australia and other English-speaking countries)

This position is being offered in a Temporary Part-Time capacity (0.6FTE), 43.5hours per fortnight.

About our School:

Narbethong Special School is a unique specialist school located in Woolloongabba, providing high-quality educational programs for children and young people with vision impairment. The school supports students from birth through its Early Childhood Development Programs and caters for students from Prep to Year 12. Renowned for its expertise in vision impairment education, Narbethong delivers specialised programs in pre-braille, braille, deafblind education and auditory scanning, while fostering a rich literacy environment that supports students to reach their full potential. The school is also home to Queensland's State-wide Vision Impairment Services, including the Alternative format Library (AFL) and Education Low Vision Assessment Centre (ELVAC). Our school of excellence takes great pride in showcasing prebraille teaching, braille with students with additional impairments, deaf/blind programs and auditory scanning for students with significant vision impairments.

As the Administration Officer (Braille) - Vision Impairment Statewide Services, you will have responsibility for the following:

  • Translate curriculum materials into braille using Duxbury software.
  • Apply and maintain expertise in Unified English Braille (UEB) and technical braille codes (mathematics, science, languages, music).
  • Proofread and edit braille and large print materials for accuracy.
  • Produce learning resources in braille, large print, audio, dual media and tactile formats, including conversion of diagrams, graphs and maps.
  • Develop tactile kits and early learning resources to support students with vision impairment.
  • Use specialised software and equipment (Duxbury, Microsoft, Adobe, Oliver Library system, embossers, printers, scanners, PIAF).
  • Ensure compliance with copyright and licensing requirements.
  • Support daily operations of the Alternative form.at Library, including cataloguing, processing requests, barcoding and data entry.
  • Liaise with schools, publishers and external agencies to support alternative form.at needs.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop resources and provide administrative support.
  • Demonstrate strong organisation, prioritisation and interpersonal skills to meet deadlines.
