Riverview State School is seeking a Community Education Counsellor (Identified) to provide support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and families. This position focuses on improving student wellbeing, attendance, engagement, and educational outcomes through culturally relevant practices and promoting a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging within the school environment. This role supports Riverview State School's explicit improvement agenda of improving learning outcomes for all students and creating and maintaining a safe, supportive, and respectful please of teaching and learning. This position is being offered in a Temporary Part-Time capacity (0.49FTE), 36 hours per fortnight. Our preferred days are Monday, Thursday, and Friday.

About the Role:

As Community Education Counsellor, your primary responsibility is to provide culturally responsive support, ensuring First Nations perspectives are understood, respected, celebrated, and integrated.

A significant aspect of this Community Education Counsellor role entails developing and coordinating activities and programs, in partnership with external services, that encourage the educational involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families.  This may include in-class presentations that strengthen cultural understanding, lunchtime activities, and assisting with the delivery of state-wide programmes such as the Solid Pathways Programme, ATSIAP Challenge, and Deadly Choices.  You will also establish and facilitate regular meetings for families and the community in order to drive participation and engagement.

As Community Education Counsellor, you will provide cultural leadership within the school and provide the school community with information on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and cultural perspectives and advises the school leadership team on appropriate cultural protocols to ensure culturally responsive and inclusive practices and strategies can be embedded.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist students and families in navigating and engaging meaningfully with education, ensuring both students and families feel valued, supported, and empowered.
  • Provide case management support, educational counselling, and cultural guidance with the intention of addressing the individual needs and challenges of students and their families.
  • Promote student wellbeing through mentoring, behaviour support, and ongoing guidance.
  • Work collaboratively with the school, support providers, and the local community to address barriers to education including language differences, socio-economic challenges, or limited access to support services.  As such, this role prioritises building strong, trusting relationships with students and families.
  • Assist with the coordination of significant cultural events throughout the year such as NAIDOC Week and Multicultural Day and support school processes such as enrolment, re-entry, and similar meetings with families.  The CEC also assists with monitoring student attendance and retention through regular student check-ins, home visits, phone calls home, and data tracking.  Other administrative responsibilities include maintaining accurate records (e.g. OneSchool documentation) and participating in ongoing professional development through regional learning opportunities and workshops.
