Brisbane School of Distance Education are seeking a compassionate, highly skilled and student-focused Guidance Officer to join our school community and provide high-quality guidance, counselling and support to students across a range of academic, social, emotional and wellbeing needs. This role will contribute to inclusive and responsive student support practices, provide professional advice to staff, facilitate appropriate referrals and interventions, and strengthen partnerships that enhance student outcomes. We are looking for an empathetic and collaborative professional who is committed to ensuring every student feels supported, valued and empowered to reach their potential.

About the Role

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Provide comprehensive student support and counselling, including advocacy, psychoeducational assessment and individualised advice to students, teachers and families across educational, behavioural, social, emotional, mental health, career and family matters.
  • Lead collaborative case management and referral processes, working as part of multidisciplinary teams and building effective partnerships with families, school staff and external agencies to optimise student wellbeing, engagement and access to appropriate educational programs and supports.
  • Assess student needs and develop targeted interventions, using observation, assessment and professional expertise to identify learning, developmental, behavioural, psychological and emotional needs and recommend appropriate adjustments, individualised plans and support strategies.
  • Provide specialised support for complex and critical needs, including student protection matters, critical incidents, intensive behaviour support, risk management, transitions to alternative education and reintegration into mainstream schooling.
  • Support student pathways and build whole-school capability, including career development, SET planning, future pathway counselling, professional learning for staff and parents, and the development of effective practices that comply with ethical, professional, privacy, confidentiality and legislative requirements.
