About the Department of Education:

The Department of Education is dedicated to building an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the community and schools we support by treating everyone with respect and dignity. This starts with recruitment and selection. The methods of assessing suitability in the recruitment process may vary. This includes making reasonable adjustments to support applicants at all stages of the process and employee lifecycle.

About our Team:

The Student Wellbeing Package will ensure every Queensland primary and secondary state school student has access to a wellbeing professional at school. Our team was created due to young people in Queensland experiencing mental health concerns at increased rates and levels of complexity. Schools needed to be equipped to respond appropriately to students' mental health concerns. To support Queensland state schools and their students, the number of wellbeing professionals working in schools increased over 3 years as part of the Queensland Government's $106.7 million Student Wellbeing Package. We are now a multi-disciplinary team of professionals comprising Psychologists, Guidance officers (with a counselling focus), Social workers and Youth workers based in Mount Isa.

About the role:

The focus of the role is to provide therapeutic support for students with mild to moderate mental health concerns based in Mount Isa. Wellbeing professionals employed through the Student Wellbeing Package work as part of schools' established student support teams to enhance the wellbeing and mental health support available to students. This is a dynamic, school-based role and there are opportunities to provide service through a tele-practice mode and flexibility to working arrangements dependent on the needs of the school's population. Some of our positions bring opportunity for travel and outreach to rural and remote settings to support our most vulnerable communities in the North Queensland region. Our roles involve supporting more than one school in the region.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide professional support and information to students, parents, carers and school communities that facilitate partnerships in decision making for the enhancement of all students learning
  • Operate in an advisory and advocacy capacity providing professional services specific to the psychology/social work discipline.
  • Respond to the needs of the student population and school community to provide assessment, personal counselling and family counselling, and group work.
  • Facilitation of early intervention supports such as for referrals to other allied health professionals, and service and care coordination for the purpose of assisting student's wellbeing and mental health

Benefits:

  • Flexible work options, including the possibility to accrue time off for school holidays
  • Full-time options available
  • 12.5% superannuation available
  • Tax savings through salary sacrificing options are also available
  • Ongoing regular internal supervision and possible peer supervision
  • Work phone and laptop supplied
  • The potential to apply for access to housing
  • Relocation Assistance if applicable
