This is a temporary full-time position to commence as soon as possible, until 26 June 2026 (end of Semester 1), unless otherwise determined.

About the Role

This position supports Boulia and Dajarra State Schools, two small remote schools within the Western Alliance — a collaborative of four North West Queensland K-6 schools (including Camooweal and Burketown) focused on improving outcomes through shared planning, aligned curriculum, and instructional leadership.  Under the Department's Equity and Excellence strategy and Partnership Initiative, each school cluster has a dedicated Head of Department (Curriculum) leading strategic teaching and learning improvements.

  • You'll work closely with school leaders and teachers across both sites, with a flexible weekly roster ensuring meaningful, consistent engagement.
  • The role delivers flexible delivery options: fly in and out weekly from Townsville, or be based in Mount Isa with subsidised accommodation and use of a departmental vehicle to travel to Boulia and Dajarra. Accommodation is available in both communities, regardless of preferred base location.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic curriculum planning aligned to Australian Curriculum v9 (ACv9), focusing on English, Mathematics, and Science
  • Support rigorous assessment and moderation using the “before, after, after, end” model
  • Build teacher capability through modelling, coaching, and collaborative inquiry
  • Promote high-quality curriculum resource sharing and consistent instructional practices across schools
  • Contribute to a professional learning culture that values reflection and ongoing improvement

About You

  • Proven experience leading curriculum planning aligned with departmental priorities
  • Committed to embedding inclusive, equitable, and socially just education practices
  • Hold high expectations for student achievement and support staff capability
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students, staff, families, community partners and local agencies
  • Operate confidently within legislative and governance frameworks of Queensland state education

Benefits and Location

  • Additional incentives may apply, including subsidised housing in Mount Isa and help with transfer and appointment expenses.
  • Rewarding career opportunity for a curriculum leader willing to work across rural communities.
  • Travel between Mount Isa, Dajarra, and Boulia using a departmental vehicle. Accommodation is available at both Boulia and Dajarra, regardless of the preferred base location.
  • Flexible weekly roster will be arranged, usually alternating between the two schools to ensure strong community engagement and consistent curriculum delivery.

Please refer to the attached role description for any mandatory requirements for this position.

Applications remain current for 12 months from the closing date and may be considered for appointment to identical or similar vacancies within the Department.
