Vocational Trainer - Cleveland Education and Training Centre

Cleveland Education and Training Centre is accepting applications for two motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic Vocational Trainers. One for Construction/Cabinet Making and the other Engineering to join their team on a temporary full-time basis commencing Term 2 2026 for 12 months unless otherwise determined. To be successful in the position, you will need to be a qualified trainer and assessor in the general building and construction trades or engineering trade. You will need to hold Cert IV in TAE40122. As a vocational trainer, you will deliver hands- on instruction to students as part of a vocational education Certificate in Construction/Carpentry or the Engineering course and support students to develop broader employ-ability skills which will assist their transition to further training or employment.

About Us:

Cleveland Education and Training Centre (CETC) is a Department of Education school operating within the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Townsville. The Centre's catchment comprises the area graphically north from Rockhampton, west to the border and includes island communities off the Queensland coastline. Young people incarcerated by the court system are from ten to eighteen years.
CETC is a service provider within the Detention Centre therefore all staff are required to comply with a range of safety and security protocols. From 2022 CETC has delivered education programs within the Detention Centre for 48 weeks of the year. All staff will operate on a roster where leave allocation may fall outside the mainstream school holiday periods. All new staff employed will need to be willing and able to take their allocated leave outside the school holiday periods to accommodate rosters.

About the Role:

Reporting to the RTO manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of high quality and compliant training that results in successful outcomes for students. You will support students using a personalised learning approach, maintain records of student progress and contribute to the continuous improvement and strategic direction of the school. The ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrated skills and experience in delivering building and construction / carpentry or engineering qualifications to students with diverse learning needs and from a range of settings, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, speakers of English as an additional language or dialect, young people with learning difficulties and early school leavers. You will plan and implement a program of instruction related to building students

Responsibilities include, but not limited to;

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with schools, industry, and the community to create and support student job and work placement opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with VET and RTO requirements, including accurate reporting, documentation, and adherence to training and assessment standards.
  • Deliver and support high-quality training and assessment in collaboration with the VET Program Coordinator, ensuring students achieve competencies and are work-ready.
  • Monitor student attendance, behaviour, and progress, implementing early intervention strategies to support successful outcomes.
  • Oversee equipment, resources, and safety practices, including maintenance, stock control, and instruction in safe and effective use of industry-related tools and techniques.

Highly desirable skills and experience:

  • An understanding of the Australian Governments Core Skills for Work Developmental Framework
  • Experience with competency based training in foundation skills and pre-employment training.
