Normanton State School is a seeking a Head of Department - Junior Secondary who will work beside an experienced leadership team and would be contributing to the curriculum development, the reading and literacy program development and general running of the secondary department. The suitable applicant would require knowledge around Version 9 curriculum and experience in working with IEALD students. This is a temporary full-time position commencing 27 July 2026 until 4 December 2026, unless otherwise determined.

About Us:

Normanton State School is a remote, rural school that offers learning experiences for students from Prep to Year 10. We are a co-educational school and we cater for students with a range of learning needs and interests.

We focus on improving student literacy and numeracy outcomes. Our teachers base their curriculum on the Australian Curriculum using the Curriculum to Classroom (C2C) resources in all key learning areas.  Students have specialist lessons in The Arts (Dance, Drama and Visual Arts), Technology (Digital and Design), ICT Skills and Health and Physical Education from Prep to Year 10. Our Secondary students do a range of subjects including Manual Arts and Home Economics in Years 7 and 8, and Hospitality and Industrial Technology and Design in Years 9 and 10.  Year 9 and 10 students also participate in work experience twice yearly.

About the Role:

As Head of Department - Junior Secondary, you will require leadership skills to coach and mentor secondary staff and would need to be able to demonstrate behaviour management skills that could be used to support a range of students.

The suitable applicant would need to be confident working with both the school and wider community members and would be competent in following processes and procedures to ensure students would be receiving the best outcomes possible.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Provide strategic leadership by developing and implementing a shared educational vision that promotes high-quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • Foster an inclusive, high-expectation culture by embedding socially just practices and maintaining high standards for student achievement and staff performance.
  • Lead continuous improvement through strategic planning, future-focused decision-making, and a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Build strong partnerships with students, parents, community organisations, and government agencies to support positive educational outcomes.
  • Manage resources and governance effectively by overseeing human, financial, facilities, and curriculum resources while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and departmental policies.
