Director, Inspections


BRISBANE CITY

The Director has a critical role in supporting the Ombudsman and Inspector of Detention Services to carry out functions under the Inspector of Detention Services (IDS) Act. The work is focused on promoting and upholding the humane treatment of detainees, including humane conditions of their detention, and preventing detainees from being subject to harm, including torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The Director establishes and manages teams responsible for inspecting places of detention (including youth detention centres, prisons, and watch-houses). The Director will take a lead role in overseeing the preparation of inspection reports, by Principal Inspection Officers, for tabling in parliament. The Director is responsible for ensuring team members understand and work towards achieving the Office’s strategic direction and statutory responsibilities.

How you will add value (key responsibilities)

You will:

  • Lead and manage teams of inspectors to ensure performance outputs are established, planned for, and communicated to staff.
  • Manage team resources to ensure efficient and effective completion of inspections.
  • Develop recommendations for improvements to detention services and places of detention.
  • Oversee preparation of complex inspection reports for tabling in parliament.
  • Prepare other reports, submissions and publications for consideration of the Executive Director, DSIU.
  • Monitor and report on team performance to meet internal and external requirements.
  • Support the Executive Director, DSIU, including:
  • in discussions with senior officers of detention service providers
  • on visits to places of detention
  • in engagement with detainees and their families, in ways that are responsive to the cultural background or vulnerability
  • at forums about IDS and the work of the Office.

You will be expected to:
