Queensland Parliament's Committee Office supports parliamentary committees, including portfolio and select committees to have oversight of executive government action including proposed legislation and public expenditure, and contributing to policy and legislative development. Committees work on matters of public importance in Queensland, ranging from youth justice, environmental law, regional industry development, transport, human rights, legislative principles and almost everything in between. Supporting stakeholder engagement in parliamentary democracy is key to our work. In the Committee Office, you will:
- Support committee consideration of proposed legislation (Bills) for their policy implications, compliance with fundamental legislative principles and human rights; and the lawfulness of subordinate legislation;
- Support committees to examine the estimates, public accounts, public works and performance of various departments and statutory bodies, assessing their integrity, economy, efficiency and effectiveness;
- Support committees to undertake Inquiries on matters relating to their portfolio areas of responsibility, or on any issue referred to them by the Legislative Assembly or under an Act; and
- Plan and support committee hearings, consultations, and site visits, prepare briefings and reports, and communicate with stakeholders.
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- A relevant tertiary qualification;
- Demonstrated ability to research, analyse and evaluate complex issues and to develop strategic recommendations;
- Proven ability to present findings in a clear, concise and accurate manner: excellent writing skills are a must;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as independently, under pressure and to tight, non-negotiable deadlines;
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, both orally and in writing, using appropriate language and style;
- A high level of attention to detail and awareness of confidentiality requirements; and
- Knowledge of parliamentary processes and procedures, particularly relating to committees, or the ability to acquire such knowledge quickly.
