The Queensland Parliamentary Service is recruiting two Assistant Committee Secretaries to support the vital work of parliamentary committees - researching complex issues, drafting reports, coordinating inquiries, and helping deliver transparent, accountable government.

There are two positions available. One is a 12 month temporary opportunity with the possibility of extension.
The other is a fixed term contract of up to 3 years. Please indicate in your application which opportunity you are interested in. 

Key Objectives

  • Support parliamentary committees to undertake inquiries and fulfil their statutory responsibilities.
  • Deliver high‑quality research, analysis and written advice within tight timeframes.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of committee inquiries, engagement and reports to Parliament.

Your Role

  • Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive briefings, issues papers and draft committee reports.
  • Undertake complex research and analysis using a broad range of sources and tools.
  • Provide procedural and other advice to committees and support high‑quality decision‑making.
  • Prepare questions and summaries to support effective committee hearings and briefings.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating committee inquiries, hearings, consultations and visits.
  • Support the organisation of meetings, hearings and briefings, including minutes, correspondence and tabling documents.
  • Analyse Bills, submissions and evidence, including consideration of fundamental legislative principles and human rights obligations (where applicable).
  • For relevant secretariats, assist with complaints handling, secure document management and statutory functions.
  • Travel within Queensland and interstate as required to support committee activities.
  • Undertake additional projects and duties for the Speaker, Clerk and Deputy Clerk as required.

What We're Looking For

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (law highly desirable).
  • Proven ability to research, analyse and evaluate complex issues and develop sound recommendations.
  • Highly developed written communication skills, with experience drafting briefs and reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Self‑motivation, initiative and the ability to work effectively in a small, collaborative team.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, the Queensland Parliament and committee system.
