The role
As a Mycobacteriology Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services, adhering to Queensland Public Service values and defined health and safety policies. Core responsibilities include specimen reception, sample processing, inoculation, AFB microscopy, culture interpretation, susceptibility testing, and molecular work, all performed to a consistently high technical standard. Working with minimal supervision, you will make independent decisions within your scope of responsibility while demonstrating a professional, team-focused attitude and effective communication skills. A commitment to quality management is essential, including compliance with NATA/ISO accreditation and participation in quality assurance activities, internal and external quality control programs, and the preparation of procedural documentation. You will also support supervisory staff in maintaining an effective mycobacterial service and may undertake shift work as required.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in clinical microbiology techniques, the ability to work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision, and effective communication and teamwork skills. A commitment to quality management principles and continuous improvement is essential, alongside an understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance programs. Qualifications include a recognised tertiary degree in science (preferably Medical Laboratory Science) with a major in Microbiology or an equivalent qualification, along with relevant technical experience. Experience with mycobacterial work is highly desirable, and proof of qualification must be provided before commencing duties.

Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland and plays a critical role in the government's response to public health threats, epidemics, and civil emergencies.
PQ offers laboratory services in the disciplines of anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology, and genomics. PQ also provides expert analysis, scientific testing, and advice to maintain and improve our public and environmental health, and to support the coronial system in Queensland.
