The successful candidate will participate in day & evening shift scientific rostering at the Caboolture Laboratory, performing simple to complex investigations, in each of the disciplines for which the Laboratory is responsible.

Your key responsibilities

  • Provide scientific leadership within the Caboolture Laboratory in Haematology and Transfusion services.
  • Develop, implement, maintain and improve supervised services in concert with the Caboolture supervising team, the Group Laboratory relevant discipline Chief Scientists, TPCH group stakeholders and Pathology Queensland stakeholders.
  • Possess the ability to implement and validate new instrumentation.
  • Provide scientific advice and services to the Caboolture & Kilcoy Hospitals and other clients relating to Haematology and Transfusion services.
  • Ensure supervised services meet or exceed service delivery KPI's.
  • Liaise with clients and relevant reference Pathology Queensland laboratories Haematology and Transfusion services.
  • Liaise with the Caboolture Senior Scientist for Chemistry, POCT, Micro and PCR services to coordinate performance and development of the Caboolture Health Practitioner team including training, provision of feedback and continuing education for supervised services.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and development for the laboratory.
  • Actively participate in continuing education and personal professional development.
  • Provide scientific education and role modelling to the Caboolture Laboratory team for supervised services.
  • Minimise costs through strict inventory control and workflow review and design.
  • Perform all Quality duties relating to the role including adherence to policies and procedures, document control, analyser maintenance and calibration record keeping, staff training and record keeping, Performance and Development Plan reviews, external Quality Assurance Programme participation of supervised services and appropriate use of internal Quality Control systems.
  • Ensure compliance of Haematology and Transfusion and other relevant supervised laboratory departments with Pathology Queensland policies and ISO15189 requirements.
  • Potential to Backfill the Supervising Scientist during periods of absence by the incumbent as required

Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to perform simple to complex investigations, in all disciplines for which the Caboolture Laboratory is responsible.
  • An ability to apply advanced scientific judgement in Haematology and Transfusion testing.
  • An ability to provide complex advice to laboratory staff and Hospital and Health Service clients on a broad range of issues pertaining to Haematology and Transfusion testing.
  • An ability to perform comprehensive operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of relevant analytical equipment including Bio-rad instruments such as the IH500 and Banjo as well as the Roche XN instruments and ACL coagulation analysers.
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise in the operation and management of Haematology and Transfusion services in line with the strategic direction of Pathology Queensland.
  • An ability to supervise and train a team of Health Practitioners complying with the policies of Pathology Queensland and the Department of Health.
  • Experience in the use of software systems including a Laboratory Information System (Auslab), Unity, Quality Information System (QIS), Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, S4HANA, myHR, RiskMan and more.
