About the role

Join our team as a Principal Policy Officer within the Strategy and Governance (S&G) division. S&G provides strategic planning, governance, policy, engagement and advisory services. The team combines contemporary thinking and practices in a proactive and positive manner within a highly complex and changing environment.

As part of this dynamic team, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping policies, driving strategic initiatives, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements. In this multifaceted role, you'll utilise your deep understanding of the public sector landscape to interpret, apply, and communicate legislative requirements effectively. Your responsibilities will include researching, analysing, and developing policies and strategies to achieve government and organisational objectives. Crafting accurate and concise reports, technical documents, and briefing papers will be second nature to you, thanks to your exceptional written and oral communication skills.

Drawing on your analytical expertise, you'll synthesise information from various sources to provide advice to decision-makers. Collaboration will be key, as you consult and negotiate with internal departments, government bodies, and stakeholders on a range of topics including policy, performance, and complaints management. Your project management skills will shine as you navigate competing priorities, manage change, and meet deadlines with ease.

About you

You are a strategic thinker with a strong background in policy development and analysis. Your ability to navigate complex and ambiguous environments, coupled with high-level analytical skills, will enable you to provide sound and well-considered advice. You thrive in dynamic settings, demonstrating excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build effective partnerships and contribute positively to team culture.

To excel in this role, the following attributes will be your keys to success:

  • Strong understanding and experience of government policy and strategy development.
  • Demonstrate high level analytical skills and ability to identify options and implementation impacts, resolve challenges and apply sound judgement in complex and ambiguous environments.
  • Strong ability to understand, support and communicate the reasons for decisions and recommendations based on evidence.
  • Ability to establish clear plans to deliver activities within agreed timeframes.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply specialised knowledge, skills and judgement associated with policy analysis, evaluation and review and utilise knowledge to achieve outcomes.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
