Medical Scientist - Flow Cytometry


Herston or Woolloongabba

We are excited to offer two roles as a Medical Scientist, the primary focus for these roles is to provide continuity in the delivery of state-wide flow cytometry pathology services and harmonise testing strategies for haematological malignancies across the flow cytometry testing sites within Pathology Queensland. A requirement of this role will be to include mandatory travel of at least 6 weeks per year, to other sites, including Gold Coast University Hospital, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and Townsville Hospital Laboratory.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated high level of knowledge and skill in the clinical diagnostic Flow Cytometry principles, procedure, results interpretation and assay/instrument troubleshooting.
  • Experience in the use of a Laboratory Information System such as AUSLAB,
  • Ability to work in a diverse scientific role and perform duties with varying degrees of independence depending on experience.
  • Significant experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas – instrument or method validation and implementations, training, education, quality or troubleshooting in flow cytometry.
  • Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and an ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and with members of staff.
  • High level communication skills and ability to maintain professional relationships in the workplace.
  • Ability to lead process improvement and client liaison activities.
  • Ability to develop collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders and team members and ability to effectively communicate and influence staff.
  • Ability to work with a multi-discipline team rotating through the departments as required and contribute a range of diagnostic skills and guidance relevant to the disciplines.
  • Commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement and to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification.
  • Awareness of procedures policies and regulations which impact on the position such as the Queensland Health Code of Conduct, Workplace Health and Safety, Equal Employment Opportunity and Anti-discrimination.
  • Awareness of the human resource management policies applicable to contemporary workplaces.
  • Ability to work across Pathology Queensland Flow cytometry sites under direction of multiple Principal Chief Scientists and Supervising scientists.
