The Principal Inspector, Pipelines, has a pivotal leadership role within the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate at RSHQ. As a member of the Inspectorate's Leadership Team, you will demonstrate safety and health leadership for petroleum and fuel gas pipeline operations including gathering pipelines, transmission pipelines, distribution pipelines, and distribution systems.

To do this you will be a motivated professional with demonstrated engineering expertise and experience in pipeline operations, petroleum and fuel gas safety and health management, production, storage, transport and utilisations. Understanding, or a capacity to rapidly acquire an understanding, of recent legislative changes to extend the regulatory framework for petroleum and fuel gas pipelines to hydrogen, hydrogen blends and hydrogen carriers will be highly regarded.

Appointed as an inspector under the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (the Act), you will have experience with shift work, on call or after-hours roster arrangements.

In the role you will be called upon to interpret, apply, and provide guidance to internal and external stakeholders on the application of legislation, relevant Australian standards, policies, and procedures relating to petroleum and fuel gas pipeline operations.

A tertiary qualification (bachelor's degree or higher) in engineering and RPEQ or CP Eng competency or equivalent is required for this position.

As the Principal Inspector, Pipelines you will lead the Inspectorate's strategic delivery of risk-based regulatory services to monitor and enforce provisions of the Act relating to safety and health for petroleum and fuel gas pipelines.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating audits, inspections, safety alerts and investigation activities to ensure corrective measures are implemented
  • Monitoring and reporting on industry trends, emerging technologies and developments in safety management systems to improve safety outcomes and reduce harm
  • Responding to high level enquiries from members of the public, industry, internal and external clients and analyse, recommend and/or determine appropriate action and follow through to ensure all client enquiries are satisfactorily dealt with within timeframes.
  • Liaising and coordinating timely provision of professional and specialist advice and information to industry and government including representation of RSHQ at standards committees, industry bodies and conferences as required.
