We are seeking an experienced Principal Lawyer to join the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA). This role is required to enhance the RTA's legal capabilities and ensure delivery of high-quality legal services to RTA business divisions, Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Board.

This position is a permanent, full-time role and is located in the Brisbane CBD with generous flexible working arrangements.

Are you an experienced lawyer looking for a diverse and rewarding role in the Queensland public sector?  This Principal Lawyer opportunity offers a rare blend of autonomy, leadership, variety and impact within a high-performing team in a statutory body dedicated to servicing the Queensland community.

As Principal Lawyer, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality legal services in a broad range of practice areas.  No two days are the same as you may find yourself advising on employment and administrative law matters, contracts and statutory interpretation before the day is out.

You'll work closely with the executive leadership and operational teams, providing strategic legal advice and supporting the delivery of public sector initiatives in a legally compliant and ethical way.  You will also contribute to policy development, risk management and decision-making at all levels of the organisation.

To be successful you will need:

  • A Degree in Law from a recognised tertiary institution and qualification for immediate admission as a Barrister or Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Queensland
  • 7+ years PQE with, with public sector and/or governance experience highly regarded
  • Ability to identify and mitigate operational and strategic risks
  • Demonstrated experience drafting high quality legal advice across a broad range of practise areas, including commercial contracting, QITC, employment law, statutory interpretation and prosecutions
  • Demonstrated experience in leading resource development to ensure continual improvement in the delivery of legal services
  • Effective leadership skills to mentor and manage the Legal Officer role
  • Demonstrated experience with drafting and negotiating complex contracts and maintain management of the contracts register.
