• This training position is specifically for Registered Nurses enrolling in a Master of Mental Health Nursing Program in an Australian University in 2024 which meets minimum criteria for application to become a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse. Incumbents in these positions will need to meet enrolment and academic requirements for their Master Mental Health Nursing Program, as well as meet organisational and clinical standards of practice and performance.

About the role

The registered nurse supports excellence in nursing care and patient outcomes, is a competent clinician who provides mental health nursing care with clinical competence and capability, optimising access to care services. The registered nurse works in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to provide person and family centred, quality, safe patient care. 

The registered nurse provides contemporary, evidence-based nursing services and demonstrates competence in the provision of nursing care as specified by achievement of the standards of practice and registration requirements from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). This is evidenced by educational preparation, continuing professional development, adhering to relevant legislation and the context of care.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Contemporary clinical knowledge in the area of mental health nursing delivering competent nursing care in complex situations while providing support to other team members.
  • Ability to provide quality focused nursing care for consumers and their families utilising the National Mental Health Standards and the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce 2013.
  • Knowledge of, and a demonstrated commitment to, quality processes and evidence-based practices, identifying areas for improvement and contributing to these improvements.
  • Demonstrates strong self-management skills, a commitment to nursing, and flexibility to adapt to unexpected changes.
  • Ability to communicate to a high standard effectively and engage with members of the healthcare team, patients, relatives and visitors whilst displaying a high level of professional nursing care.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Applicants must be accepted for enrolment into a Master of Mental Health Nursing Program which is offered by an accredited Australian University and which will lead the participant to be eligible to apply to become credentialed as a Mental Health Nurse on successful program completion.
  • Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO. 01/16
