Wildlife Officers within the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation work to protect, conserve and manage the sustainable use of Queensland’s native wildlife. The work is regionally-based and delivered throughout Queensland with support provided by central office in Brisbane CBD. Wildlife Officers are an integral part of the units within the Wildlife and Threatened Species Operations, QPWS & Partnerships and provide a range of services, including advice, assessment and auditing of permits and other authorities under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and subordinate legislation and operational delivery of services to conserve and protect wildlife and associated habitat.

The team operates in Cairns or Townsville, Queensland to deliver services to conserve and protect native and threatened wildlife and associated habitat. Wildlife Officers in the Northern Region Operations have a focus on wildlife management. This includes working with crocodiles, cassowaries and flying-foxes. This may require safely responding to isolated and remote situations in North Queensland for extended periods of time. Tasks are likely to include operating communication and navigational systems, employing survival techniques, undertaking equipment repair, and the use of environmental indicators to make decisions. You may be required to undertake short term stays in remote locations with little or no facilities available.
As a Wildlife Officer you will undertake field operations, inspections, field monitoring and associated activities. You will also be required to undertake tasks and provide advice related to the management of wildlife, including the safe capture, handling and husbandry, in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures. Also, you will provide support for incident responses in relation to wildlife incidents.
