The Litigation unit works on behalf of the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation and other government departments, conducting prosecutions and defending appeals against decisions in relation to environmental matters, including Planning and Environment Court and Land Court appeals. The Litigation unit includes a project team that is responsible for managing large-scale litigation with respect to high-profile and contentious matters.

The responsibilities of a Principal Lawyer PO6 are exercised with respect to serious, high profile and complex matters, as well as leading a team of lawyers.

  • Managing operational and legal aspects of a large-scale litigation project with a team of three dedicated lawyers.
  • Conduct criminal and civil proceedings, including trials and sentences, and appeals in the Planning and Environment Court.
  • Brief and work closely with both senior and junior counsel.
  • Negotiate with other parties in litigation.
  • Have carriage of and manage all aspects of litigation files within a team.
  • Exercise initiative and be able to provide legal advice quickly and effectively.
  • Assist the Senior Director in the management of the unit by providing leadership, actively participating in planning activities, and providing leadership to colleagues.
  • Mentor, train and supervise other lawyers in your team of approximately three people.
  • Prepare clear and concise correspondence including Ministerial briefs and responses, Cabinet submissions, briefing notes, advices, legal documents and recommendations.
  • Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.
