The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Policy Officer (PO4) to join the Koala Policy and Oversight Team on a permanent basis.

The Koala Policy and Oversight Team makes a valuable contribution to the conservation of koalas, including by developing policy and strategies, and delivering projects and programs for koala conservation and koala habitat protection.

The Senior Policy Officer will play a key role in implementing koala conservation policy in Queensland. Partnering with key stakeholders, the Senior Policy Officer will provide high quality policy advice, and lead and contribute to a range of projects, including developing and reviewing statutory instruments, strategies, plans, policies and guidelines that support koala conservation.

As a Senior Policy Officer (PO4) within the Koala Policy and Oversight team you will contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity and the conservation of koalas, including by developing policy and strategies and delivering projects and programs for koala conservation and koala habitat protection.

This involves working with stakeholders and delivering actions contained withing the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy. The Senior Policy Officer will provide high quality policy advice, and lead and contribute to a range of projects, including developing and reviewing statutory instruments, strategies, plans, policies and guidelines that support koala conservation and the stewardship of subordinate legislation under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

We're looking for the best suited applicant for the role. We'll do this by assessing your eligibility and your suitability to undertake the requirements of the role (including, where relevant, the way you carried out previous roles). We'll also consider your potential to make contributions to the department and how your engagement would support our commitment to equity, diversity, respect and inclusion.

This position requires:
1. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the analysis and development of complex policy, supporting materials and legislative amendment processes, particularity relating to environmental protection or wildlife conservation and management.
2. Demonstrated well-developed ability in researching and critically analysing conservation and environmental policy issues to identify strategies and solutions that are based on evidence and that are fit for purpose.
3. Demonstrated well-developed experience in applying key concepts and principles of legislation when developing policy responses.
4. Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex ideas to a diverse audience, including the preparation of reports, briefing notes, presentations, and external correspondence.
5. Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to monitor tasks progress against plans to ensure deadlines are met and establish priorities, and communicate outcomes to supervisors and identify risks and uncertainties.
6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a fast-paced team environment, ability to be agile in thinking, handle competing priorities and complete tasks within required timelines.
7. Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of safety, innovation, respect and inclusion.
