Join the Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation as a Senior Project Officer and take a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing the implementation of the First Nations Koala Action Plan. This role offers a substantial opportunity to collaborate with First Nations communities and stakeholders across South East Queensland (SEQ) to protect and preserve our valued koala populations.

As part of our dynamic team, you'll be at the forefront of innovative conservation initiatives, striving to halt the decline of koala populations while also focusing on the restoration and preservation of key koala habitats. You will have the chance to work closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as part of our agencies broader initiatives to partner with and empower traditional owners in the management and conservation of land and sea country. Through various activities that improve koala conservation outcomes, you'll be supporting efforts under the SEQ Koala Conservation Strategy 2020-2025 to not only stabilize koala numbers but also aim for a long-term increase in their populations. 

This flexible, full-time position based in SEQ allows for a balance between work and life commitments, providing flexibility and accommodating travel to different centres which may include occasional overnight stays. The successful applicant will significant flexibility to craft their work week, with a combination of working from home, as well flexibility to work at a range of locations across SEQ. 

The role embodies our department's commitment to cultural capability, requiring you to demonstrate the ability to deliver services effectively and engage significantly with First Nations organizations. Your role is crucial in establishing partnerships and empowering collaboration with these communities and other stakeholders to bring the First Nations Koala Action Plan to fruition. You will be tasked with planning, delivering, and reporting on the implementation of the plan, ensuring that work programs support the strategic outcomes of the SEQ Koala Conservation Strategy. Additionally, financial management of projects, including procurement and contract administration, will be part of your responsibilities. 

Bring your project management skills to the table, utilizing your experience in managing multiple projects in a dynamic changing environment. Your negotiation skills will also be put to use as you work with First Nations groups, government departments, and local councils to deliver positive outcomes for the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service & Partnerships (QPWS&P), consistent with strategic priorities. 

Throughout the term of your position, which is temporary until 30 June 2025 with the possibility of an extension, you will be a role model for our leadership behaviours.
With your communication prowess, you'll foster a culture that promotes the interests of First Nations people and engage through your work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people in Queensland.
