About the role
Mount Isa Hospital is the regional birthing facility for low and medium risk birthing (from 32 weeks gestation). Our region covers from the north to Mornington Island, south to Dajarra, east to Julia Creek, and west to Lake Nash (Northern Territory). Outlying remote facilities do not have the service provision or equipment to birth except in the circumstances of emergency / unplanned births. We welcome around 480 babies each year, with 40% born to indigenous mothers.
The Mount Isa Hospital contains an 8-bed Maternity Unit, 3 birthing suites and 3-bed Special Care Nursery.
The Obstetrics & Gynaecology unit provides a reasonable range of services including most obstetrics and operative general gynaecology with some laparoscopic surgery and urogynaecology. We provide a colposcopy service at the hospital and at outreach clinics. There is extensive use of portable ultrasound by clinicians.
Mount Isa Hospital offers Certificate and Procedural Training through the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) as well as experience for Rural Generalists and GP Obstetricians.
