The Department of Local Government, Water and Volunteers (DLGWV) previously known as the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (DRDMW) is at the forefront of driving sustainable growth across Queensland. The Role:
Join the largest engineering team in the Department and make a difference towards the safety and well-being of Queensland's communities. The dam safety team is responsible for regulating water dams and setting the standards dam owners must comply with to protect the community.
Conduct dam site audits, assess and approve failure impact assessments and emergency action plans, participate in technical review of dam projects, attend inspections, actively search for and assess new dams, and provide technical support during wet weather events.
We also develop policies and guidelines, contribute to the broader water infrastructure oversight responsibilities of the Department, conduct training programmes and engage with industry to improve dam safety management.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, Dam Safety, lead the engineering team and deliver high quality outcomes. The role can be based in Brisbane or in a regional location.
Key Accountabilities:
• Manage a team of professional and technical persons to support the implementation of best practice dam safety within the regulatory framework of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008 and other relevant legislation.
• Provide high level technical reviews of dam safety documentation and make recommendations regarding compliance with relevant legislation and industry standards.
• Provide advice with dam owners, stakeholders and staff regarding departmental legislation, policy and guidelines relating to the regulation of referable dams.
• Investigate complex issues and undertake audits, to determine the level of compliance with legislative requirements and dam safety conditions and prepare reports.
• Review or undertake numerical (hydrological and hydraulic) modelling projects relating to dam safety assessments.
• Inspect water supply dams in response to known or suspected dam safety impacts or public enquiries and provide accurate information to the Director Dam Safety.
• Participate in the development and implementation of dam safety policy, guidelines and standards.
About You:
• Hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree (mandatory) and current registration as (or eligibility for) a Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ).
• Have extensive post-graduate experience as an engineer in relevant dam engineering fields.
• A class ‘C' drivers licence is required.
• Limited travel away from the centre may be required.
