Townsville Hospital and Health Service, is the public healthcare provider for the government areas of Townsville, Burdekin, Charters Towers, Flinders, Richmond, Hinchinbrook and Palm Island. What's on offer?
Remuneration package of up to $536,916 p.a.

  • Base salary range: $210,332 to $266,677 p.a. (L18-L27)
  • 4 to 6 weeks annual leave with 14%-17.5% loading
  • 12.75% employer contribution to superannuation
  • Attraction and retention incentive allowance (50% base salary)
  • Regional and rural attraction allowance (5% base salary)
  • Motor vehicle allowance between $21,000 and $25,500 p.a.
  • Professional development allowance of $21,500 p.a. + 3.6 weeks p.a. leave

About the role
All Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) accredited neurosurgeons who may wish to avail themselves of this opportunity should apply.  We would like to attract neurosurgeons to North Queensland and this presents an ideal opportunity to experience the professional and personal lifestyle in this beautiful part of Australia.

This is a staff specialist position where the majority of commitment is to the public hospital, however additional private practice opportunities may be available.

The department is expanding its scope in terms of volume and subspecialisation to meet the needs of the north Queensland community.

The capabilities expected of the role are of a well-trained general neurosurgeon. Independent surgical practice in routine areas of elective, acute and traumatic brain, spine and peripheral nerve surgery is expected.  Of most importance is the ability to work as part of a team and accept the advice and oversight of senior colleagues in a learning and development environment.

We undertake outreach outpatient clinics in Cairns and Mackay as well as provide outpatient and inpatient Care through Townsville University Hospital.  Air travel is outreach clinics is an expected part of this role.

The hospital is a well-equipped tertiary hospital has an intensive care unit, radiology department with interventional capability, PET scanner, radiation oncology and the full range of Surgical and Medical specialty groups.

Role requirements

  • Qualified as a medical practitioner with specialist qualifications and registration, or eligible for registration, as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia in the appropriate discipline.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivilant distinction.
  • Candidates who will be obtaining fellowship in the near future are encouraged to apply. Appointment will be at a lower classification level until minimum requirements for the Staff Specialist classification are obtained.
