Teacher Aide (Identified) - Fitzgerald State School

Are you passionate about supporting students and helping them achieve their full potential? Fitzgerald State School are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Teacher Aide (Identified) of either Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent to join our team of educators.

The focus on working with teachers, students and the community to promote and develop an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.

This role is offered on a permanent part-time basis at 0.32 FTE and 24 hours per fortnight.

About Fitzgerald State School

Fitzgerald State School offers a distinctive curriculum with extra curricula activities such as excursions, camps, learn to swim programs, sport, debating, academic competitions and a student council.  Additionally, this school has a strong history of commitment to the Arts with a school musical, our 'Spectacular', an annual highlight and a number of public performances by its highly acclaimed drama and Wakakirri groups. 

About the Role

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting teachers and students with sporting activities and with school excursions.
  • Communicating effectively and displaying high level of interpersonal skills to function as an effective team member.
  • Development of activities which promote productive partnerships between individual and group members of the community, under the relevant teacher or other staff member responsible for the indigenous portfolio.
  • Maintaining anecdotal records on students for use in reviewing student's development.
  • Displaying confidentiality, tact, reliability and sensitivity to students and their families.

Our ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

Suitability Assessment Criteria -

  • Experience and ability to work with and support First Nation students;
  • Experience and ability to support the management of self-care requirements of identified students;
  • Knowledge of behaviour management strategies;
  • Is able to work as part of a team;
  • Display confidentiality, tact, reliability and sensitivity to students and their families;
  • Have strong communication and time management skills;
  • Literacy and numeracy competency;
  • Is motivated and uses initiative;
  • Assisting teaching staff with playground/bus supervision.

Mandatory Requirements for and Identified Role:   

It is a genuine occupational requirement for Identified roles that the position be filled by an Aboriginal person or a Torres Strait Islander person as set out in Section 7 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991 for the purposes contained in Section 25 of that Act.   

Verification of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Island heritage   

For administrative purposes, in relation to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person is a person who identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and is either:   

  • of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;  
  • accepted as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which he or she lives.   

By definition a person who is not an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cannot be employed (on any basis) to perform the duties of an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified role.   

Applicants to this position may have to provide confirmation of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. Requesting proof of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage from applicants helps to make sure that this intention is honoured.
