About the Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS)

The Integrated Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) provide complex secondary and tertiary level health care. CYMHS offers specialised mental health services for families with children and young people (birth to 18 years) who experience severe and complex mental health problems, and where their needs cannot be met by other services. CYMHS provides a comprehensive, recovery-orientated mental healthcare service that aims to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people and their carer networks. Recovery principles are embedded into service delivery, culture and practice, providing consumers and their families, in collaboration with other services, access and referral to a range of programs that will support and sustain recovery. CYMHS combines hospital and community-based facilities to provide free consultation, assessment and treatment of children and young people experiencing serious mental health disorders and problems with their carer network.

Your Opportunity:

The position of Medical Director, CHQ CYMHS has the following Medical Directors providing clinical governance for:

  • Campus – acute inpatients, acute response, consultation-liaison at Queensland Children's Hospital
  • Community Statewide Adolescent Extended Treatment
  • Specialist Teams – Assertive Mobile Youth Outreach Service, Evolve Therapeutic Services, eCYMHS
  • Community Teams
  • Forensic Programs
  • Queensland Centre for Perinatal and Infant Mental Health (QCPIMH) and Early Intervention
  • Eating Disorders

In addition, the Conjoint UQ/CHQ Professor of Child Psychiatry, and consultants' workings across the Registrar Training Unit and Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) also report up to the Medical Director CYMHS.

The position of Medical Director, CHQ CYMHS will: 

  • Lead and manage the delivery of high quality tertiary CYMHS teams
  • Provide clinical governance and leadership in the provision of specialist child and adolescent psychiatry services in the areas of assessment, intervention, treatment planning and evaluation, training and education, supervision, research and service development.
  • Lead the implementation of effective performance appraisal and medical staff development systems within the CYMHS, CHQ HHS.
  • Work with the Divisional Director CYMHS to promote and develop multidisciplinary teams across the service, using well-developed professional and interpersonal skills, fostering and promoting and environment of participation and collaboration for service developments, improvements and innovations.
  • Act as the Administrator of the Mental Health Act 2016 for the CHQ Authorised Mental Health Service (AMHS).
  • Provide support to the Executive Director, Medical Services (EDMS) in the delivery of high quality medical administration services including:
    • contribution to senior medical professional leadership
    • contribution to the EDMS on-call Roster; and
    • provision of cover for EDMS emergent and planned leave if required.

The successful candidate will have the knowledge and skills to provide from time to time up to 0.4FTE temporary, flexible cover for Program Medical Directors or across CYMHS teams during periods of consultant leave.

The role will commence from November 2025, though there is an option to act in the role beforehand.
